Hantsweb The Alton and District Badminton League

About

Many design considerations have gone into the web site so far. My main objectives have been to make it easy to read, simple to use, and nice to look at. Of course, the strength of a website is mainly goverened by its contents and the content of this site will continue to grow, change and improve through time. If you have suggestions for the site then please feel free to contact me.

I constructed the site from scratch including the graphics, etc. I have spent a reasonable amount of time testing the site for various things including different web browsers. Browsers that the site works with and has been tested with are Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Konquerer, Internet Explorer and Lynx.

There are no amazing or ground-breaking techniques used within this site. I have designed it this way to keep in line with the objective of making the site fast and simple. It also means that I'm not doing anything too complicated to manage for when the time comes to pass the site on to the next Alton Badminton Webmaster. However, if you have any technical questions, queries or whatever about this site or how to do your own site then I will do my best to help you out. Don't forget that you're already using the biggest resourse in the world - the web is your friend!

Site Change History
DATE CHANGE DETAILS
24 / 05 / 2001 League AGM. It was decided that the league should produce a website. Graham White volunteered to create and administer the new site. Space can be gained from Hantsnet, the match secretary is willing to co-operate with fixtures/results for the site and a quick show of hands put the site into action.
01 / 06 / 2001 Webspace on Hantsnet has been granted. The league has 50Mb of space free of charge on hantsweb at http://www.hants.gov.uk/altonbadminton and a forwarding e-mail alias of altonbadminton@hantsweb.org.uk. Site creation is now under way.
16 / 07 / 2001 WEBSITE NOW LIVE! I have been working on the site under the privacy of my own computer up to now. I have published the site so that it can be viewed by league members before the fixtures meeting this week. I will also demo the site at the fixtures meeting from my laptop to get some feedback on the site so far.
22 / 07 / 2001 Individual club information has been added to the site to form the "clubs" section. This provides a face for each club on the site and useful information for both current and interested league players. Info for each club can easily be updated and/or personalised at the request of the club.
23 / 07 / 2001 The League Constitution has been scanned from old copies. This has been done to add it to the site and to form a new hard copy version as well.
30 / 08 / 2001 League Constitution updated to reflect changes agreed in the AGM of 2001. Rule 7 in part 2 of the constitution has changed along with references to "Mike Goddard" and "Blackdown Labels" which were changed to "Presidents Sheild" and "Blackdown Press" respectively.
12 / 09 / 2001 Tournament dates have been written up and posted on the site in table format. The Fixtures have been put up using PHP to translate typed up fixture lists into web format. The initial format for both tournaments and fixtures is very basic and will be improved with time.
12 / 09 / 2001 Guestbook has been added for comments, suggestions and signing. The guestbook is a free run guestbook service from http://www.theguestbook.com so ultimate responsibility for it lies with them as it is run directly from their servers.
01 / 10 / 2001 Fixtures were added to the site a while ago but I have now updated the fixtures page so that it can be easily maintained and updated in future seasons. Fixtures now give the options to choose the fixtures to be viewed by the user through their web browser.
14 / 10 / 2001 Changed the structure of the main page and the titlebar for better viewing in lower resolutions. Added the results section to the site now in the same format as the fixtures section (no results data yet though). Added a link for the League Tables but still need to write PHP code for this. Major update on every page to include meta data so that the pages and the site is easier to find via search engines. Fixed a bug on the fixtures selection page under netscape where the instructions were not visible.
17 / 10 / 2001 Implemented the League Tables page. This works in the same way as the fixtures and results pages where the user can choose which league table they want to see. Tables displayed are sorted with the team with the best position in the league appearing at the top of the table.
29 / 10 / 2001 Added the first set of data to the site (note data updates will no longer appear in the change history section after this one). Updated the front page instruction sets for the League Tables, Fixtures and Results display pages to include more detail and better instructions on what to do.
27 / 08 / 2002 Main site update preceeding the 2002-2003 season. Uploaded new data files for the fixtures for the new season (except mens fixtures at the moment). Made some changes to the Constitution to correct some mistakes and add the new mens doubles rules. Need to check the system will still work for the new mens format (4 people per team) before adding these fixtures to the site.
01 / 05 / 2003 Completely overhauled the look and feel of the site to the look you can see today. None of the functionality has changed (except the removel of the non-used Guestbook feature). The Laws/Rules page has been changed to point to the PDF rules document for 2002 (the latest available). The Links page has been updated to remove some old broken links and add a couple of new ones.
30 / 07 / 2003 Updated the League Constitution to delete the premier league secretary (since there is no premier league), and changed the mens doubles rules - both as agreed in the 2003 Annual General Meeting. I have also made an easy-print Constitution - simply replace .php with .html in the address bar on the constitution page.
07 / 08 / 2003 Main site update preceeding the 2003-2004 season. Uploaded all new data files for the fixtures. I have also added a handy 'printable' utility to the fixtures, results, and tables pages that will allow easy printing of this information.
29 / 06 / 2004 Improved the look and feel of the site a little again with some nice new menus and a few stylesheet changes to make the site more readable. Also did a small amount of work on site compatibility. I have been through most of the pages and made sure links work, information is up-to-date, etc. with the exception of club information and next seasons fixtures which are still to come.
09 / 07 / 2004 I seem to have just completely re-written the entire back-end to the site. Some big changes have been made behind the scenes which aren't entirely obvious at first. However, it has made producing the "League Leaders" and "Latest Results" sections on the front index page very easy and makes future maintenance a lot easier for me.
23 / 07 / 2004 Uploaded the fixtures for the 2004/05 season. Removed the latest results and league leaders from the index page (until we get some results in there's no point). Also, fixed a bug in the league table display function.
06 / 09 / 2004 Added badminton news to the site. This is syndicated from elsewhere but provides badminton news from sources all over the internet. I'm still not 100% sure about the news section yet so it's a bit experimental for now, may also be required to remove it at any time, we'll see.
15 / 01 / 2005 Made a small change to the form that allows you to select results/fixtures/tables for a particular leage/division/season. The links at the top of the form will now link directly to the relevant information rather than back to the index. The menu links on the left remain in the old format so these may still be used to reference instructions if you're not sure what to do.
10 / 09 / 2005 Uploaded the fixtures for the 2005/06 season. Reset the web site for the coming season, no major code additions, but updated all the various information around the site.
17 / 09 / 2005 Updated the news section to give it a slightly better look and feel. News section also changed to show Badminton England news on the front page rather than world news and syndicate world, Badminton England and BBC Badminton news in the news section using a nice little open source news feed program. As usual, Alton Badminton cannot be responsible for this content but it should prove a useful addition to the site.
10 / 09 / 2006 Uploaded the fixtures for the 2006/07 season. Reset the web site for the coming season, no major code additions.
12 / 09 / 2006 Updated the league constitution to reflect the recent vote to move the ladies league to the same fours format as is currently played in the mens league.
28 / 05 / 2007 Changed the constitution as voted in the AGM to reflect penalty points awarded for late match cards. Updated the front page to advertise coaching in Alton, and a new informational league e-mailing list.
25 / 08 / 2008 Uploaded the fixtures for the 2007/08 season. Reset the web site for the coming season, no major code additions.
